Rookery Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve, 300 Tower Rd., is in an area of mangrove islands that shelters rare birds and marine life. The Rookery Bay Environmental Learning Center features interactive exhibits that highlight the plants and animals found in the 110,000-acre reserve as well as an aquarium, a touch tank with indigenous marine animals, naturalist-led daily programs, an art gallery and a butterfly garden. An observation bridge and nature trail also are on the grounds. Science Saturdays programs are held monthly. Special events are offered; guided walks and kayak and boat tours are offered seasonally.
