Historic Spanish Point, 337 N. Tamiami Trail (US 41), is a 30-acre historic site on Little Sarasota Bay. Florida pioneer life is interpreted through a homestead house, a chapel, a citrus packing house and boat-building exhibits. Spanish Point was the site of the winter estate of Bertha Palmer, widow of a Chicago businessman; the grounds contain formal gardens she created in the early 1900s and a butterfly garden. Visitors can view an archeology display inside a prehistoric shell mound. Guided tours are available. Picnicking is permitted. Time: Allow 1 hour, 30 minutes minimum.
