Calusa Heritage Trail is off Pineland Rd. at 13810 Waterfront Dr. on Pine Island. The research center highlights the ecology and history of Pineland Archaeological Site, which features a massive Calusa mound complex. For nearly 1,500 years, the tribe created shell mounds, engineered canals and fished in the estuaries. The trail, nearly a mile in length, features observation platforms and historical markers detailing the area.
