MOSI (Museum of Science & Industry), 4801 E. Fowler Ave., contains more than 100 hands-on exhibits and demonstrations pertaining to science, technology, space, health and weather. Exhibits include Mission: Moonbase, featuring a simulated lunar colony; Idea Zone, a makerspace with robotics, 3D printing and prototyping; Connectus, which focuses on STEAM careers; and Core Science, which has interactive STEAM exhibits.
The multilevel Sky Trail Ropes Course and Sky Trail Zip Line dare you to defy gravity and your fears while testing your balance and dexterity. Make your way through the challenging ropes course that includes swinging steps, balance beams and trembling bridges 12 to 36 feet above ground level. On the zipline course you'll soar 65 feet above ground level for a total of 700 feet. Participants are safely strapped in with a harness, so there's no danger of falling.
The center also features Coleman Science Works Theater and Saunders Planetarium. Outdoor facilities include The Richard T. Bowers Historic Tree Grove and The Backwoods Forest Preserve.
Note: MOSI is closed for remodeling and is scheduled to reopen Nov. 18, 2017. Visitors are required to sign a release of liability before climbing the Sky Trail Ropes Course or Sky Trail Zip Line; clothing, height and weight restrictions apply. Phone ahead for details.
