AAA Editor Notes
Uncle Remus Museum is at 214 S. Oak St. in Turner Park. Housed in a log cabin built from two slave cabins, the museum recreates the setting where the little boy in Joel Chandler Harris' tales heard the stories of Uncle Remus, thought to be a composite of two slaves who excelled at storytelling. Displays include woodcarvings and paintings of Harris' characters, first editions of many of his books and Civil War memorabilia.

The fictional setting was based on Turnwold, a plantation near Eatonton where, at age 13, Harris began his apprenticeship at a weekly newspaper, The Countryman, in 1862. It was at the paper that Harris heard the fanciful yarns that later formed the basis of his writing. A mentor to Harris, representations of Joseph Addison Turner's library and office are on display.

Guided tours are available. Time: Allow 30 minutes minimum.
