Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History is at 2829 Cherokee St. This Smithsonian affiliate focuses on the history of railroads during and after the Civil War. The museum’s exhibits tell the story of “The General,” which was stolen during an incident known as “The Great Locomotive Chase.” A 25-minute film about the chase is presented. A Civil War regimental flag is on display. Also featured is a replica of the Glover Machine Works locomotive factory complete with restored belt-driven assembly line and several trains in various stages of completion. Changing exhibits are offered as well in the Cobb Energy Gallery.

The Jolley Education Center has hands-on activities for both children and adults and showcases a restored Georgia Merci Boxcar that carried troops and aid supplies in Europe during both World Wars.

Guided tours are available. Time: Allow 1 hour, 30 minutes minimum.
