New Echota State Historic Site

New Echota State Historic Site is off I-75 exit 317, 1 mi. n. on SR 225 to 1211 Chatsworth Hwy. (SR 225). Established in 1825, the Cherokee Nation’s capital of New Echota was the site of the Cherokee Phoenix, the first Native American-language newspaper office; the signing of the Treaty of New Echota; and the assembly of Native Americans for removal west on the infamous Trail of Tears.
The restored village features 12 original and reconstructed buildings, including missionary Samuel Worcester's home, Cherokee Court and Council houses, the Cherokee Phoenix printing office, a general store, smoke houses, barns and other outbuildings. Visitors can view exhibits and watch a 17-minute film at the on-site museum. A research library also is available. The grounds feature 1.25 miles of nature trails.
