Fort McAllister State Park is 4.5 mi. s.e. on SR 144, then 4 mi. e. on SR 144 Spur to 3894 Fort McAllister Rd. On a bank of the Great Ogeechee River, the fort is an example of Confederate earthwork fortifications; it withstood bombardments by the Union navy on Mar. 3, 1863. The fort finally fell before Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman's army on Dec. 13, 1864. A museum contains exhibits and artifacts. Guided tours are available. Pets on leash are allowed. Recreational activities are permitted. Camping is permitted. Picnicking is permitted.
