Fort McAllister State Park is 4.5 mi. s.e. on SR 144, then 4 mi. e. on SR 144 Spur to 3894 Fort McAllister Rd. On a bank of the Great Ogeechee River, the fort is an example of Confederate earthwork fortifications; it withstood bombardments by the Union navy on Mar. 3, 1863. The fort finally fell before Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman's army on Dec. 13, 1864, toward the end of the Civil War. A museum contains exhibits and artifacts.

Guided tours are available. Pet friendly (call for restrictions/fees.). Recreational activities are permitted. Camping is permitted. Picnicking is permitted.
