Sapelo Island National Estuarine Research Reserve is reached by a 30-minute ferry ride. To reach the dock take I-95 exit 58, then SR 99 s. 9.1 mi. to Landing Rd. in Meridian, then left to the Sapelo Island Visitors Center. The visitor center at the dock features exhibits and information about the area. Bus tours may include the Palladian-style R.J. Reynolds mansion, the Sapelo Lighthouse, the University of Georgia Marine Institute and Hog Hammock, a small community of Sapelo Plantation slave descendants.

Guided tours are available.

Admission
Visitor center free. Ferry $15; $10 (ages 6-12). Credit cards are not accepted for tours. Reservations are required.
Hours
Mansion tour departs Wed. at 8:30 and returns at 12:30. Lighthouse tour departs Sat. at 9 and returns at 1. Extended tour departs the last Tues. of the month at 8:30 and returns at 3, Mar.-Oct. Fri. tour departs at 8:30 and returns at 12:30, June 1-Labor Day; itinerary varies between mansion and lighthouse so phone to confirm. Visitor center open Tues.-Fri. 7:30-5:30, Sat. 8-5:30. Closed federal and state holidays. Allow 4 hours minimum.
