Bonaventure Cemetery is at 330 Bonaventure Rd. This former plantation has been a cemetery since the mid-19th century. The site, which encompasses 100 acres, overlooks the Wilmington River and has an abundance of live oak trees, some of which are 250 years old. Many of the graves incorporate beautiful statues and ornate carvings. Among the famous persons interred here are author Conrad Aiken and composer Johnny Mercer. One-hour guided walking tours are offered. Note: Visitors should be aware of the potential for theft and are not advised to travel alone. Valuables should not be left in automobiles. Guided tours are available. Picnicking is permitted. Time: Allow 1 hour minimum.
Donations.
Hours: Daily 8-5. Volunteers from the Bonaventure Historical Society are available in the office Sat.-Sun. 10-4 to provide maps and a brief overview of the cemetery and former plantation. During second Sun. weekends, walking tours are given Sat. at 2 and Sun. at 2, 2:30 and 3.
