St. Simons Island Lighthouse Museum and A.W. Jones Heritage Center, 101 12th St., is in a restored 1872 lighthouse keeper's house. Exhibits depict local history and the life of a lighthouse keeper and his family. Visitors should begin their visit at the heritage center, 610 Beachview Dr., that contains additional exhibits. A research library is open to the public by appointment. The adjacent lighthouse offers a fine view of the island. A lighthouse built here in 1810 was destroyed during the Civil War.

Hours: Museum and lighthouse open Mon.-Sat. 10-5, Sun. 1:30-5. Last admission 30 minutes before closing. Closed Jan. 1, Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and Christmas.
