University of Guanajuato is on Calle Pocitos/Lascurain de Retana. The school has been in almost continuous operation since it was opened by Jesuits in 1732 at the request of Spain's King Philip V. It became a state university in 1945. Ten years later a modern new addition with interconnecting patios and open-air hallways was built, complete with Moorish-style facade. The city's cultural arts showcase, it offers theater, symphonies and student performances of Cervantes' entremeses (short comic presentations).
