Na ‘Āina Kai Botanical Gardens is on SR 56 between mileposts 21 and 22 at 4101 Wailapa Rd.; go .5 mi. e. on Wailapa Rd. to the visitor center entrance. This once-private 240-acre estate is a marvelous tapestry of 12 gardens and wild areas sprinkled with more than 130 life-size, representational and sometimes whimsical bronze sculptures. Notable features include a three-quarter-acre lagoon with many colorful koi fish; a plant-shaped hedge maze in which unexpected flowers, topiaries and sculptures delight the wanderer; an international desert garden; a plantation of hardwood trees; a bog house; a beachside meadow; and a children’s garden. The gardens may be viewed only on guided tours, which are led by knowledgeable guides and range from 90 minutes to 5 hours, depending on the tour. Picnicking is not permitted. Guided tours are available. Time: Allow 2 hours minimum.
