Pros: There is a charm to this property and these cottages that is truly special. Walking out to the black sand beach to watch the sunset, listening to the birds in the morning, relaxing in the beautiful cottages with tasteful classic Hawaiian decor. This is such a special place and we only wish we could have stayed longer!

Pros: Close to Waimea Canyon.
Cons: Rude reception staff. The cottage had been in need of renovation for at least half a century. Yellow streaks on the sink and tub, the sink a true piece of junk, set so low I had it at mid-thighs (I am 5"5). The shower head leaked and sprinkled water sideways on the toilet paper. No lock on the bathroom door, which closed only if slammed. Air conditioning in the master bedroom was so noisy it covered the roosters' cries, but still less noisy than the fan. In a cottage for four, we had only a tiny square table and 2 chairs on the lanai, and 2 Adirondacks in front of the house, so we could never sit together. Cleaning only every three days, dirt on the baseboards everywhere. We woke up the next day to find 11,fishing rods set on the beach, no way to swim. When we protested, they say we should not swim there anyway because the beach was polluted by a river nearby, and we should drive 8 miles to find a clean beach. When we headed for the pool we found out that children had defecated in it, for the second time that day, and instead of closing and sanitizing it, they had just fished the turds out! We visited Waimea Canyon and left after the second night. They accepted to not charge us for the two remaining nights.

Pros: Fantastic non-commercial, authentic atmosphere. Great old cottage. The resort had wonderful, rustic facilities - hammocks in trees, shuffleboard and other unexpected delights
Cons: The beach is not a swimming beach

Pros: This was our second trip to Waimea Plantation Cottages. What a perfect location for a low-keyed vacation. If you want touristy excitement, head north - but if you want a sense of what Kauai was in the not-too-distant past, stay here.
