AAA Editor Notes
Kaūmana Caves, 4.5 mi. s.w. on Saddle Rd. (SR 200) at 1568 Kaūmana Dr., are lava tubes formed by the Mauna Loa eruption of 1881. During its activity this flow came closer to Hilo than during any other on record. Stairs lead down to the cave leading toward Hilo, which can be explored on self-guiding tours for about a half-mile; it ranges 2.5 feet to 5.5 feet high and 10 feet to 50 feet wide.

Note: Visitors should be careful crossing Kaūmana Drive from the parking area; no traffic signs or crosswalks are available. They should also use caution and watch their footing since the area is often damp and wet with uneven ground. Those entering the cave should have a flashlight and be aware that the area is extremely cramped. The other cave is dangerous and should not be entered.
