Minidoka National Wildlife Refuge extends 20 mi. up the Snake River from Minidoka Dam; refuge headquarters is 12 mi. n.e. via SR 24 and CR 400N. As many as 100,000 waterfowl stop at the refuge as they migrate along the Pacific flyway. Some 200 species of birds plus mule deer, pronghorn antelopes and various predators inhabit the 20,699-acre refuge.

Fishing, boating and picnicking are permitted on the western end of Lake Walcott, though boating is prohibited October through April. A 1.2-mile hiking trail loop with interpretive signs is accessible via Lake Walcott State Park, 11 mi. n.e. of Rupert off SR 24. Roads are primitive.
