AAA Editor Notes
Mesa Falls Recreation Area is 15 mi. n.e. via SR 47 and Mesa Falls Scenic Byway. Henry's Fork of the Snake River carved a canyon here in tuff and basalt rock forming two scenic waterfalls. Upper Mesa Falls plunges 114 feet over a 200-foot-wide precipice. An interpretive boardwalk loops down for close-up views of the falls and canyon. Big Falls Inn, a 1916 roadhouse, serves as a visitor center that offers exhibits about plants and animals, the geology of the falls and the inn's history. Trails cut through the area, including one departing from a roadside pullout .8 miles south that leads to 65-foot Lower Mesa Falls and a 2-mile nature trail starting at the visitor center parking lot.
Picnicking is permitted.
