Weis Rockshelter is in Nez Perce National Historical Park, 8 mi. s. of Cottonwood, 7 miles w. of US 95. Archeological excavations of this cliff recess have revealed almost continuous human occupation between 5500 B.C. and A.D. 1400. The niche near the Salmon River is thought to be the first shelter for the Nez Perce more than 8,000 years ago.
