DuSable Black History Museum and Education Center, a Smithsonian affiliate, is in Washington Park at 740 E. 56th Pl. Named for Chicago’s first permanent settler, the museum houses several galleries including the DuSable Masterworks Collection Series I: Paintings, which highlights work by such artists as Augustus Savage and Henry O. Tanner. Other galleries include Freedom, Resistance and The Journey Toward Equality and A Slow Walk to Greatness: The Harold Washington Story which highlights the life of the former mayor of Chicago. Temporary and traveling exhibits also are presented.
