Lederman Science Center is on the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab) campus, 3 mi. n. of I-88 Farnsworth Ave. exit at jct. Kirk Rd. and Pine St. Geared toward students in grades 4-9, the center features hands-on physics exhibits. The center’s interactive displays focus on the work performed at Fermilab, where scientists explore sub-atomic particles. The Take a Cosmic Shower exhibit simulates a cosmic ray shower experience. Visitors also can see educational exhibits pertaining to Fermilab research in the atrium and on the 15th-floor observation level of Wilson Hall, the central laboratory building at Fermilab. An art gallery with rotating displays also is available. The grounds contain a prairie trail, a bison enclosure and bicycle paths. Note: Photo ID is required. Guided tours are available.

Hours: Grounds daily 8-8, Apr.-Oct.; 8-6, rest of year. Center open Mon.-Fri. 8:30-4:30, Sat. 9-3. Wilson Hall open daily 8-5; 15th-floor observation level open Mon.-Fri. 8-4:30, Sat.-Sun. 9-3. Art gallery Mon.-Fri. 8-4:30. Guided tours of Wilson Hall are given Wed. at 10:30 and every third Sun. at 1, during the summer. Tours of Lederman Science Center are given the first Sat. of the month at 10. Closed major holidays. Phone ahead to confirm schedule. Allow 2 hours minimum.
