Byron Forest Preserve District is .3 mi. e. on W. Blackhawk Dr. (SR 2), .3 mi. s. on S. Union St. (SR 72), then just w. to 7993 River Rd. Visitors can explore 450 acres of preserved prairie land. The site includes more than 6 miles of trails for hiking, walking and cross-country skiing; an 18-hole golf course; the Jarrett Prairie Center, which houses interactive nature, history and prairie restoration displays and an observation deck that over looks the prairie; the Heritage Farm Museum with restored farm buildings; and an observatory. Educational programs are available. Guided tours are available by appointment. Guided tours are available. Picnicking is permitted. Time: Allow 2 hours minimum.
Preserve free. A fee may be charged for guided tours and educational programs.
Hours: Grounds daily dawn-dusk. Prairie center Mon.-Fri. 8-4:30 (also Tues. and Thurs. 4:30-8), Sat. 9-4, Sun. 1-4. Farm museum Mon.-Fri. 8-4:30, Sat. 9-4, Sun. 1-4, Apr.-Oct.; by appointment rest of year. Observatory Sat. (also Tues., June-Aug.) dusk to 3 hours after dusk. Phone ahead to confirm observatory viewing conditions.
