Chicago Architecture Foundation and Tour Center, at 224 S. Michigan Ave. in the Santa Fe Building, features exhibitions, tours and lectures detailing Chicago’s contributions to architecture. The Chicago Model exhibit includes a highly detailed scale model of Chicago. The foundation is the starting point for more than 85 architecture tours of Chicago and the surrounding area via foot, bus, boat, trolley, “L” train, Segway and bicycle. Among the many walking tours available are 90-minute docent-led tours that focus on either Chicago's historic or modern skyscrapers. A 90-minute river cruise with Chicago's First Lady Cruises departs from the southeast corner of Michigan Avenue Bridge at Wacker Drive and highlights more than 50 architecturally significant sites along the Chicago River. Guided tours are available. Food is available. Time: Allow 2 hours, 30 minutes minimum.
Foundation and Tour Center and exhibitions free. Walking tours $15-$20. Bus/trolley tours $30-$75. Cruise fare $39.74. Reservations are recommended for tours.
Hours: Foundation and Tour Center open daily 9-6:30 (also Fri. 6:30-7 p.m.). Architecture cruises depart daily, early Apr. to mid.-Nov. Cruise departure times vary; phone ahead. Walking tours depart daily year-round; phone for schedule. Closed Jan. 1, Thanksgiving and Christmas.
