Museum of Science and Industry, in the historic Hyde Park neighborhood at 5700 S. DuSable Lake Shore Dr., is housed in a reconstruction of the Palace of Fine Arts from the 1893 Columbian Exhibition. Interactive exhibits of applied sciences, engineering and industry are included in the more than 14 acres. The Science Storms exhibit recreates some of nature's most powerful phenomena—tornadoes, lightning, tsunamis, sunlight, fire, avalanches and atoms in motion. YOU! The Experience allows participants to explore through more than 50 interactive displays what it means to live a vital, healthy life in the 21st century.

Also included is The Great Train Story, a model train featuring more than 1,400 feet of track and 20 trains; and the Baby Chick Hatchery located in the Genetics: Decoding Life exhibit, where visitors can watch chicks hatch.

Other exhibits include the U-505 Submarine, the only German submarine captured during World War II; The Coal Mine, a working replica of an Illinois coal mine complete with mining equipment and underground train; Future Energy Chicago, where energy is transformed from one form into another; Fab Lab, a design laboratory that uses cutting-edge software and equipment; and WOW! Tour, a 1-hour behind-the-scenes look at the museum. The Henry Crown Space Center houses the five-story, Giant Dome Theater. Special exhibits also are presented.

Note: Timed-tickets are required for the Coal Mine Exhibit.

Guided tours are available.
