Apple River Fort State Historic Site, 311 E. Myrtle St., marks the site of an important battle fought during the Black Hawk War of 1832 between early settlers at the fort and more than 200 Sauk and Fox warriors. Exhibits and videos at the interpretive center and displays along the trail describe the events leading up to the attack. Living-history programs are offered on weekends May through October (weather permitting).
