Stephenson County Historical Society Museum, 1440 S. Carroll Ave., is in the Oscar Taylor Home, a two-story 1857 stone house in a parklike setting. The site, which may have been a stop on the Underground Railroad, features 19th-century furnishings. On the grounds are a log cabin, an old schoolhouse, a farm museum, an Arcade Manufacturing Co. cast iron toy museum and an arboretum containing 50 types of trees. Entrance to the museum and historic buildings is by guided tour only. Guided tours are available.
Guided tour $8; $4 (ages 6-12). Grounds and arboretum free.
Hours: Grounds and arboretum daily 9-dusk. Museum and buildings open Wed.-Sun. noon-4; closed major holidays.
