Chicago Botanic Garden, .5 mi. e. of Edens Expwy. at 1000 Lake Cook Rd. (County Line Rd.), is a 385-acre living museum featuring 27 gardens, including an English walled garden, a three-island Japanese garden, fruit and vegetable garden, a green roof garden, a nature play garden, a native woodland and prairie habitat. In Model Railroad Garden: Landmarks of America, seasonal garden-scale trains pass miniature American landmarks made from natural materials. The Gardens of the Great Basin features a carillon, water gardens, pedestrian bridges offering views and a lake bordered by flowering crab apples.
The Regenstein Center houses three greenhouses and offers classes, lectures and exhibits. A narrated tram tour is available (weather permitting). The Butterflies & Blooms exhibition offers butterfly species native to four continents in summer (weather permitting). Special events, music performances and carillon concerts also are offered. Wonderland Express, an outdoor light display and indoor train exhibition, takes place in winter.
