AAA Editor Notes
The Hegeler Carus Mansion is at 1307 7th St. In 1874 W. W. Boyington, architect of the landmark Chicago Water Tower, designed the 57-room home for a prosperous zinc smelting magnate. The elaborate interior boasts ornate parquet floors, crown moldings and gold-leaf wall coverings. Furnished as it appeared in the late 19th century, the mansion is filled with a rotating display of antique telephones, kitchen appliances, china and books. A gym downstairs features exercise equipment from the 1890s.

Visitors are allowed inside the mansion only during guided tours, which focus on the home's architecture, interior design and history, including its 80 years as headquarters for Open Court Publishing Co., a publisher of books on a wide array of philosophical, religious and scientific topics. A sunset concert series is held in summer.

Guided tours are available. Time: Allow 1 hour minimum.
