Illinois State Museum Lockport Gallery is at 201 W. 10th St. Built around 1850, the imposing limestone Norton Building originally served as a grain-processing facility, a supply store and a dormitory for crews maintaining the Illinois & Michigan Canal. Today its large, arched doors are windows overlooking the canal, and its first floor has been converted to an art museum featuring changing installations by regional artists. Guided tours are available by appointment. Note: At press time, the museum was closed due to budget cuts; phone for further information. Guided tours are available. Time: Allow 1 hour, 30 minutes minimum.
