Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge is on SR 148, 2.5 mi. s. of jct. SR 13. The refuge covers 43,890 acres, with natural areas interspersed with recreational facilities, cornfields and active businesses housed in former World War II munitions buildings. Native wildlife species include deer, coyotes, beavers, woodchucks and thousands of wintering waterfowl. A 4,050-acre wilderness area is open to foot traffic only.
