AAA Editor Notes
Lincoln's New Salem State Historic Site, 2 mi. s. on SR 97, covers approximately 700 acres. It is a reconstruction of the old town of New Salem, where Abraham Lincoln lived 1831-37. The only original building standing is the Onstot Cooper Shop, where Lincoln studied at night. A carding mill, a gristmill, the Rutledge Tavern, shops, a school, a sawmill and timber houses have been reconstructed to look as they did in the 1830s.

Interpretive walking trails are on site. The visitor center offers exhibits and an orientation video about Lincoln's life in New Salem. An outdoor theater is open mid-June through August.

Pet friendly (call for restrictions/fees.). Recreational activities are permitted. Camping is permitted. Picnicking is permitted. Food is available. Time: Allow 2 hours minimum.
