AAA Editor Notes
Poplar Grove Vintage Wings & Wheels Museum is at 5151 Orth Rd. next to the Poplar Grove Airport. The 12-acre museum campus features several buildings from the 1920s and ‘30s that were relocated to house its collection of vintage automobiles and aircraft. The stone Crites Hangar, built in 1937 by the Works Progress Administration (WPA), was disassembled at its original site 70 miles away in Waukesha County, Wis., and reconstructed here in 2001.
The hangar is now home to most of the museum's exhibits, which include vintage planes, antique bicycles, cars, a 1930s U.S. mail truck and a 1930s air racing display. Visitors can see several airplane engines, glass cabinets filled with early transportation memorabilia, an exhibit about transportation history, and a bronze statue and exhibit about early aviation pioneer Elrey Jeppesen. They also can climb into a flight simulator to test their piloting skills.
Picnicking is permitted. Time: Allow 1 hour, 30 minutes minimum.
