AAA Editor Notes
Rock Island Arsenal is on Arsenal Island in the Mississippi River. Visitors should use the Moline entrance to Arsenal Island. The government's largest manufacturing arsenal, it was founded in 1862. Highlights include the Fort Armstrong Blockhouse, reconstructed near the site of the original 1816 fort; the Corps of Engineers Clock Tower Building; and the Confederate cemetery. A national cemetery at the east entrance is open daily dawn to dusk. The island's golf course founded by Col. Stanhope E. Blunt in 1897 lies along the north shore and is open to the public.
