State Capitol is the central building of the State Capitol Group, extending more than 3 blks. along tree-shaded 2nd St. It was built 1868-88 and, at 405 feet high at the top of the flag pole, is one of the tallest buildings in central Illinois. The murals and relief work inside the dome are noteworthy. On the grounds are 13 statues including those honoring Abraham Lincoln and Stephen A. Douglas. Guided tours are available.

Hours: Guided tours are given Mon.-Fri. every half-hour 8-noon and 1-4, Sat.-Sun. and holidays on the hour 9-noon and 1-3. Closed Jan. 1, Easter, Thanksgiving, the day after Thanksgiving and Christmas. Last tour begins at closing. Phone ahead to confirm schedule.
