University of Illinois, 1401 W. Green St., was chartered in 1867 as the Illinois Industrial University. The center of campus activity is the Illini Union building. Points of interest include Allerton Park & Retreat Center, a 1,500-acre woodland park near Monticello with lavish gardens, greenhouses and sculpture; State Farm Center, an ultramodern bowl-shaped building with a large edge-supported dome; and 62,000-seat Memorial Stadium. The University Library is said to be the third largest academic library in the nation. Morrow Plots is said to be the longest-running experimental cornfield in the western hemisphere; signposts describe experiments performed since 1876.
