University of Illinois Arboretum is on Lincoln Ave. just s. of Florida Ave at 1800 S. Lincoln Ave. on the University of Illinois campus. The 160-acre arboretum features several gardens, including the Hartley Selections Garden, where more than 400 varieties of flowering plants thrive. The Master Gardener Idea Garden displays garden borders, ornamentation and vegetable gardening techniques. Tranquil tea and dry (raked gravel) gardens typical of Japanese style surround Japan House. The American Hosta Society National Display Garden features hostas and other shade companion plants.

The Kari Walkway winds around the ponds, and signs describe the different varieties of plantings and give a brief history of the gardens. A linden tree allée offers shaded benches, and grassy meadows provide pleasant spots to relax or play sports.

The Sesquicentennial Garden of flowering trees and perennials marks the University’s 150th anniversary, 1867-2017. The Pollinatarium (museum designated to pollinating animals) is adjacent to a restored prairie and can be accessed from Windsor Avenue.

Picnicking is permitted. Time: Allow 1 hour minimum.
