AAA Editor Notes
Volo Bog State Natural Area, 28478 W. Brandenburg Rd., features the state's only open-water quaking bog. A receding glacier left an unusual formation now filled with quaking sphagnum moss and a variety of plant and animal life. A .5-mile interpretive trail takes visitors on a floating boardwalk to the center of the bog. The 2.75-mile Tamarack View Trail is suitable for hiking and cross-country skiing. Brochures describing a self-guiding tour are available at the visitor center.
Guided tours are available. Pet friendly (call for restrictions/fees.). Picnicking is permitted. Time: Allow 1 hour, 30 minutes minimum.
