AAA Editor Notes
Madam Walker Legacy Center is at 617 Indiana Ave. Madame C.J. Walker, considered the nation's first African American woman to become a millionaire, made her fortune in cosmetics. The daughter of freed slaves, she started her 1927 company with “two dollars and a dream” at a time when few career opportunities existed for women of color.

Docent-led tours feature a 10-minute video and a guided walk through the building, which features a mirrored ballroom and an ornate theater with African and Egyptian motifs. A small museum chronicles the company's history. The center hosts comedy, dance and theatrical performances throughout the year.

Time: Allow 30 minutes minimum.
