Ruthmere Museum
AAA Editor Notes
Ruthmere Museum is at 302 E. Beardsley Ave. This magnificent Beaux Arts mansion was erected in 1910 for Albert R. Beardsley, one of the developers of Miles Laboratories. Reflecting the lifestyle of an affluent Midwestern family, the house features carved Cuban mahogany woodwork and paneling, French silk wall coverings, stained glass windows and hand-painted ceilings and wall murals.

The elegant rooms are adorned with elaborate window treatments, Louis XV Revival furnishings, Dresden and Wedgwood porcelains and art glass by Steuben and Tiffany. The fine arts collection includes sculptures by William O. Partridge and August Rodin as well as paintings by Lawrence Alma-Tadema, William Morris Hunt and Samuel F.B. Morse.

Tours of the Havilah Beardsley House, 102 W. Beardsley Ave., also are available. The house belonged to Dr. Havilah Beardsley, founder of Elkhart and Albert R. Beardsley's uncle.

The tour requires some stair climbing.

Guided tours are available. Time: Allow 1 hour minimum.
