University of Notre Dame is off I-80/90 exit 77, s. on US 31/SR 933 (Michigan St.) to Angela Blvd., then e. to Notre Dame Ave., following signs. The 1,250-acre main campus was founded in 1842 on the site of an early mission. The Log Chapel at the edge of St. Mary's Lake is a replica of the chapel built in 1830 by Father Stephen Badin, the first Roman Catholic priest ordained in the United States. The Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes is a beautiful reproduction of the Grotto of Lourdes in France. Eck Visitors' Center features historical displays, an aerial map, interactive kiosks and a 12-minute movie about the Notre Dame tradition. Notre Dame Stadium tours are offered by the Athletics department. Guided tours are available.
Visitor center and campus tours free. Stadium tours $10.
Hours: Visitor center Mon.-Fri. 8-5, Sat.-Sun. noon-4. Campus walking tours depart Mon.-Fri. at 10, 1 and 3, June 1 to mid-Aug.; at 10 and 3, Apr.-May and mid-Aug. through Nov. 30; at 1, rest of year.
