University of Notre Dame is off I-80/90 exit 77, s. on US 31/SR 933 (Michigan St.) to Angela Blvd., then e. to Notre Dame Ave., following signs. The 1,250-acre main campus was founded in 1842 on the site of an early mission. The Log Chapel at the edge of St. Mary's Lake is a replica of the chapel built in 1830 by Father Stephen Badin, the first Roman Catholic priest ordained in the United States. The Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes is a beautiful reproduction of the Grotto of Lourdes in France.
Eck Visitors' Center features historical displays, an aerial map, interactive kiosks and a 12-minute movie about the Notre Dame tradition. Notre Dame Stadium tours are offered by the Athletics department.
