AAA Editor Notes
Abbie Gardner State Historic Site is .3 mi. w. of US 71 at 74 Monument Dr. In a winter clash over food, 33 settlers were killed here by Sioux (Dakota) Indians in 1857. Rowland Gardner and six members of his family died in the attack; 13-year-old Abbie was captured and ransomed.

The Gardner cabin, the only surviving structure of the Spirit Lake Massacre, contains furnishings typical of pioneer life. On the grounds are a gravesite, a monument and an interpretive center.
