Boone and Scenic Valley Railroad & Museum departs from 225 10th St. Round-trip 15-mile rides are offered through the Des Moines River Valley in vintage railroad cars. Sunday through Friday a diesel engine pulls the nine-car train, while on most Saturdays “The Iowan,” said to be the last Chinese steam locomotive, makes the run. The route crosses a 156-foot-high trestle. A 30-minute trolley ride and dinner and dessert train trips also are available. The James H. Andrew Railroad Museum & History Center showcases railroad memorabilia. Guided tours are available. Time: Allow 2 hours minimum.
Sightseeing fare and museum admission $22; $9 (ages 3-12). Museum only $8; $3 (ages 3-12). Trolley ride $2; free (ages 3-12). Phone ahead to confirm fare. Reservations are recommended Sat.-Sun.
