University of Iowa is in the central section of the city. Founded in 1847, the university is home to one of America’s leading academic hospitals, Big 10 athletic events and the Iowa Writers' Workshop. With more than 30,000 students, the university is known for its programs in the arts, medicine, law, business, physics and engineering. The 1800-seat Hancher Auditorium hosts touring productions and musical acts. An eclectic collection of more than 5,000 original works of art is on display at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.
