Basilica of the Virgin of Zapopan (Basilica de Nuestra Señora de Zapopan) is at Calle Eva Briseño #152, facing the w. side of Plaza de Las Americas, the main plaza. This massive 17th-century cathedral features an ornate Plateresque exterior and a tiled mudéjar dome. In the church courtyard a statue commemorates Pope John Paul II, who gave a mass at the plaza during his 1979 visit. Within the Franciscan monastery adjacent to the basilica is the small Huichol Museum (Museo Huichol); it has displays of beadwork and other handicrafts (all for sale) made by the Huichol Indians of northern Jalisco, Nayarit and Zacatecas. Buses from downtown Guadalajara go to the basilica; the trip takes about half an hour.
