AAA Editor Notes
First Territorial Capitol State Historic Site is 3 mi. from I-70 exit 301, following signs. On the site of Pawnee, a struggling town at the edge of the Fort Riley cavalry post, the 1855 building hosted what became known as the “Bogus Legislature.” Anti-slavery arguments here led to the conflict known as the “Bleeding Kansas” period of civil unrest. Restored in 1928, the capitol is now a museum furnished with period items. A self-guiding, .5-mile nature trail features native flora and fauna.

Note: Photo ID, vehicle registration and proof of insurance are required to enter the site.
