Watkins Museum of History, 1047 Massachusetts St., is housed in a restored 1888 bank building. Displays depict area history and include a 1920 electric car, a horse-drawn surrey, an 1878 playhouse and an 1850s cannon. Changing exhibits feature such topics as early settlement, the Underground Railroad, William Quantrill's 1863 raid on Lawrence and Lawrence resident Dr. James Naismith, originator of the game of basketball.

Hours: Tues.-Sat. 10-4 (also Thurs. 4-8), Sun. 1-4, Apr.-Nov.; Tues.-Sun. 10-4, rest of year. Closed major holidays.
