Fort Leavenworth is at Seventh St. and US 73. Established in 1827 to guard the Santa Fe and Oregon trails, the fort is the oldest active Army post west of the Mississippi River. It also was an important Army headquarters during the Mexican War 1846-48.
The Santa Fe and Oregon Trail markers, the Fort Leavenworth National Cemetery and the Buffalo Soldier Monument are of interest.
Maps are available for self-guiding tours in the museum. All visitors should report to the visitor center. Photo ID is required for all visitors ages 17+ entering the base.
