Richard Allen Cultural Center and Museum is at 412 Kiowa St. The museum highlights the roles African-Americans have played in the history of Kansas and the West with exhibits about the Buffalo Soldiers, a nickname originally applied to members of the all-black Army regiments created after the Civil War. A restored Buffalo Soldiers home features furnishings and 1920s décor.
Other exhibits include an 1860 tallow light belonging to a runaway slave, a collection of historic photos and memorabilia belonging to former Secretary of State Colin Powell. An Underground Railroad guided tour also is offered.
