Richard Allen Cultural Center and Museum is at 412 Kiowa St. The museum highlights the roles African-Americans have played in the history of Kansas and the West with exhibits about the Buffalo Soldiers, a nickname originally applied to members of the all-black Army regiments created after the Civil War. A restored Buffalo Soldiers home features furnishings and 1920s décor. Other exhibits include an 1860 tallow light belonging to a runaway slave, a collection of historic photos and memorabilia belonging to former Secretary of State Colin Powell. An Underground Railroad guided tour also is offered. Guided tours are available. Time: Allow 1 hour minimum.
Museum $5; $3 (ages 0-12). Underground Railroad tour $12.50; $5 (ages 0-12). Combination museum and Underground Railroad tour $15; $5 (ages 0-12).
