Kansas Historical Society is at 6425 S.W. Sixth Ave. Set on 80 acres of woodlands and prairies, the complex is home to the Kansas Museum of History. The museum features exhibits relevant to Kansas history and the West such as an 1880s steam locomotive, a full-size Southern Cheyenne tipi, a stagecoach and a Civil War section. The State Archives contains genealogical information as well as a collection of historic documents, photographs and manuscripts relating Kansas history.

The Nature Trail winds 2.5 miles through native grassland, along creek banks and into a wooded area. Accessible to physically impaired visitors, the East Trail portion is a .25-mile loop with interpretive signs that describe the area’s natural and cultural histories. While exploring the North Trail section, visitors might see red-tailed hawks, white-tailed deer and wild turkeys.

Picnicking is permitted. Time: Allow 1 hour, 30 minutes minimum.
