Big Brutus, 6 mi. w. of SRs 7 and 102, then .5 mi. s., is the world’s largest electric mining shovel. The 11-million-pound shovel, used in strip mining to remove dirt and rocks, ceased operation in 1974. Visitors can climb into the operator’s seat of the 16-story machine. The museum contains exhibits explaining the machine’s history.
Camping is permitted. Picnicking is permitted. Time: Allow 1 hour minimum.
