Big Brutus, 6 mi. w. of SRs 7 and 102, then .5 mi. s., is the world’s largest electric mining shovel. The 11-million-pound shovel, used in strip mining to remove dirt and rocks, ceased operation in 1974. Visitors can climb into the operator’s seat of the 16-story machine. The museum contains exhibits explaining the machine’s history. Camping is permitted. Picnicking is permitted. Time: Allow 1 hour minimum.

Hours: Daily 9-6, Memorial Day weekend-Labor Day; 9-5, Apr. 1-day before Memorial Day weekend and day after Labor Day-Dec. 31; 10-4, rest of year. Closed Thanksgiving and Christmas. Phone ahead to confirm schedule.
